Radon
problems are very easily and inexpensively fixed by an EPA or state qualified
contractor. Although, the cost may vary depending on the size and design
of the home, it seldom runs more than $800 - $1500.
Radon mitigation systems really work, permanently reducing concentrations by up to 99%. And since most designs completely prevent damp soil air from entering the house, one may notice other indoor air quality improvements as well. Very little maintenance is required and operating costs are generally less than $10 per month for fan electricity and minor loss of conditioned air.
Radon Control Systems Guarantee ALARA Finally, since reduction systems lower the concentrations so effectively and eliminate peak fluctuations, living in a mitigated home reduces one's risk of radon related lung cancer to as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA), - even lower than living in most houses testing below the EPA Action Level (4 pCi/l) with no control.
Consumer Federation of America (CFA) in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency strongly recommends that ALL home buyers test for the presence of elevated radon gas. Radon, a Class A carcinogen, is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Families may be at even higher risk if there is a smoker in the house. The EPA recommends remediation if radon levels are 4 picoCuries (pCi/l) or higher. Nearly 1 out of every 15 homes in the U.S. is estimated to have elevated levels of radon.
